Dahn On The Cornerstone

While I am not in Aspinwall very often, it isn't be hard to persuade me to make the trip over the Highland Park Bridge to go to Cornerstone Restaurant & Bar (301 Freeport Road, 15215). I've been there several times for both brunch and dinner, and I would recommend Cornerstone to anyone who enjoys smaller, privately owned establishments that feature versatile and delicious menu items.

Here are my recommendations for brunch (based on the current spring menu):
  • Cornerstone Scramble ($12.5, ground lamb, roasted tomatoes, onions, spinach, feta cheese, scrambled eggs, home fries, and toast)
  • Classic Brioche French Toast ($9.5; whipped butter; choice of bacon, sausage or two eggs; and maple bacon topping) 
  • Chicken Salad Melt ($9, housemade chicken salad, white cheddar and spicy honey mustard on 6-grain)
  • Italian Pork & Apple Melt ($9.5, prosciutto, granny smith apples, brie, and whole grain mustard on 6-grain)
Hint: If you are so inclined, make sure you get the sweet potato fries as your side with a sandwich. Cornerstone's version of this staple item are fantastic!

Here are my recommendations for dinner (based on the current spring menu):
  • Mac & Cheese with lobster ($24, orecchiette, pancetta, leeks, sugar snap peas, and mascarpone)
  • Gerber Farms Amish Chicken ($19; potato carrot mash; beans and greens; and whole grain mustard jus)
  • Pan Seared Duck Breast ($25, barley, spring peas, oyster mushrooms, and rhubarb hoisin)

The interior is charming and quaint without being cute. The service is warm, and Cornerstone takes reservations, a factor that has significant value by my standards. Also, the wine list suffices and is key on Thursdays with a "$10 off all bottles of wine" special.
